Wordy Wednesday

Fortitude is a word often used to describe something big...a battle fought, a peak scaled, a disaster survived.

But when it comes to motherhood, I think fortitude is simpler, quiet, more constant.  I think it is the perfect word to describe an essential trait when mothering many different ages, stages and personalities.

It's knowing that some things should never change...the respect and unconditional love shown to children even when they are unlovable, the values we wish to teach our children in the short years we have them with us, a constant spirit in our homes that is created by us, and the consistency in our messages that need to be heard again and again.

Fortitude is defined as mental and physical strength and resolute endurance.  If we are to be the rock our children lean on, the eye of the storm they seek refuge in, the emotional center of our homes they come back to, the constant source of love they yearn for, the sounding board they spring from, the push they need to jump into life with strength and joy, then we must possess fortitude.

There is no doubt that mental and physical strength and endurance requires self-maintenance.

We have all heard that we need to take care of ourselves.  In fact, I think it's overstated and often misinterpreted, and more annoyingly,  I think, it's turned into something shallow and false.  A manicure, a shopping trip with friends, a night out.  Mommy makeover, mommy spa treatments, mommy's weekend away. There is nothing wrong with those of course, but I feel it's a perfect example of our culture's turn to a quick fix, a Pavlov's way of dealing with something quickly on the surface, and  never looking deeper.  Those things all help in the moment, and the recharge lasts for a moment, an hour, a day.  They won't sustain us.

Motherhood lasts forever and takes us up hills and down valleys, and sure there are those beautiful meadows, where as soon as we think we get it all figured out, we are shown otherwise.  We meet with unchartered territory and we are filled with doubts and worries and frustration.

Manicures on the other hand, hardly make it through the dinner dishes.   A shopping trip, a night out, have always seemed to me like coming up for sweet air, with just a gasp of breath allowed before we go back under and must begin to swim again.

Perhaps we are looking in the wrong places.  Perhaps our recharge is not "out there".  Perhaps it cannot be bought, or stolen, or compacted into minutes, or hours or a few short days.

Perhaps it must be constant and is only found inside of us.  A daily commitment to find a moment of solitude, to let our hearts and minds be still.

A daily commitment to remind ourselves of what kind of mothers we intend to be for our children.

Twin Talk Tuesday

Overheard in the backseat, Ella busy playing with her Cinderella princess doll:

Aidan to Ella: "Ella, please take Cinderella's dress off - I like the princesses better naked".

Oh boy......

Hoppy Easter!

Our day began by opening Easter baskets and cards and having a private egg hunt in our own backyard - in PJ's no lesss!

At a more respectable hour, we posed for a few pictures....

.... and headed to the club for Easter brunch with the Parkers.

We had nice relaxing Easter afternoon complete with precious family time!

Super Fun Saturday

While I was out and about all day completing three different photo shoots covering what seemed like nearly all ends of Charlotte, Grandmommy and Grandaddy spent the day with Ella and Aidan.

They took the kids to church for a children's service, followed by an Easter Egg hunt on the playground. The kids had such a great time and are still talking about all of the fun that they had!

Happy 4th Birthday Adams and Henry!

Despite the rain changing the outdoor fun that was planned, Adams and Henry still had a fantastic party!

We were so thrilled to celebrate with them again this year, and look forward to many more wonderful years of friendship!

Spring Break

The kiddos are on Spring Break from preschool this week, so we have been busy filling our days with fun and friends! No slowing down for this nearly 30 week preggo Mommy!

Monday was filled with running errands and a nice long visit with Daddy at the fire station. It is awesome when your Daddy has the coolest job in the world to (almost) four year olds! The fire station is one big playground!

Tuesday was spent as a family day. We ventured up to Latta Plantation and enjoyed a picnic by the lake. Our intentions were to visit the Raptor Center, but Ella and Aidan were having so much fun at the lake that we just stayed there and eventually headed home in time to make the afternoon showing of the movie Hop (an Easter themed kids movie).

Wednesday we ventured out with "the boys" to pick strawberries at a local farm. We do this every Spring and the kids always have so much fun!

Today hit me like a ton of bricks. I am exhausted and made the decision to stay home and have a "pajama day".

Twin Talk Tuesday

While waiting in a check out line, before I had time to intervene:

Aidan (to the nice elderly lady behind us): "Hey, do you know what? I've got something to show you....Spiderman!".

This statement was accompanied by him pulling his pants down to his ankles and turning around to show her his Spideman underwear.

28 Weeks

Today I am officially 28 weeks pregnant. If our little Disney princess does not have her own plans, she will officially join our family via C-Section on July 1, 2011.

Pregnancy Highlights:
How Far Along:
28 Weeks

Baby Stats:
She weighs about 2 1/2 pounds and beginning to get a bit crowded. Less gymnastics and more actual kicks and jabs.

Total Weight Gain/Loss:
Around 2-3 pounds - pretty much exactly what she weighs!

Movement:
Her movement is still pretty much limited to the evenings, though if I sit still for any longer than 15 minutes, she wakes up and lets me know it! Her kicks and movement are definitely more pronounced!

Sleep:
What sleep. I can't get comfortable and have constant insomnia.

What I miss:
Sleeping on my stomach. WINE and sushi!

Cravings:
Orange Gatorade, Panera Bread - broccoli cheddar soup with a grilled cheese sandwich (made with gouda cheese and tomato), Melting Pot - cheese fondu, Miro - gazpacho soup, Unsweet Tea with lemon

A few pics of how I am looking these days:

And more importantly, a little glimpse at how the little one is looking these days.

I have an anterior placenta, and she was cuddled up as close as she could get (that is what you see against her head on the left), staying near to my warmth and heartbeat. You can see her foot right below her face...she was scrunched up like that the entire time!

And when she had reached her limit of patience with us, she turned away and let us know:

We cannot wait to meet her in person!!

Twin Talk Tuesday

Overheard while Ella and Aidan were playing:

Ella to Aidan: "Well, my Daddy is a brilliant hero. What is so great about your Daddy?".

Not exactly certain where we went awry in our parenting that has led her to believe that they have different Daddy's......

Catching Up

Looks like Aidan is beginning to head in the right direction in terms of catching up to Ella with his graphic skills!

He is a tough one - he has zero interest in coloring or writing...but can build one heck of an intricate train track or "superhero" castle!

US National Whitewater Center

Once Mike finished up working this morning, we enjoyed a quick lunch and ventured out to spend the afternoon at the US National Whitewater Center.

We have not been there since the kiddos were early walkers, but it was just as fun today as it was then!

Fun with Daddy

This morning Mike decided to only do half of his yard clients in exchange for spending the morning working in our own yard with the kids.

We went to a local nursery to select a few new bushes and flowers for the front yard....

....and got right to work! Ella was all about digging and planting....

....while Aidan was more interested in raking and looking for worms....

Time spent with Daddy is such a rare treat these days - Ella and Aidan loved every single minute!
